Niš

Located on the bank of the Nišava River, Niš is the administrative, industrial and cultural center of the Nišava District and the third largest city in Serbia. Niš is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans, and the city has some unique attractions to offer to the tourists.

The Niš fortress was built by the Turks in the middle of the 17th century, in the  site of an ancient Roman fortified camp at the Nišava riverbank. The Niš fortress had a seven-sided basis, with five bastions, also with a mosque, sections of the hamam and a weapons dumb, which is today transformed into an exhibition gallery.

Nis Old Town

Mediana is an important archaeological site, the remains of a 6th century Roman settlement, located near Niš. Here used to stand the imperial residence, with palaces, baths and a villas. The central villa has an impressive floor mosaic.

The Skull tower (Cele Kula) is one of the strangest and most horrific monuments of Turkish rule in Serbia. The tower was built in 1809, after the battle between Serbs and Turks at Cegar near Niš, from the sculls of the Serbs killed in the battle.
