Mileseva Monastery

Mileseva Monastery is located in the southwestern part of Serbia, about 6 km east of Prijepolje town near the Milesevka River. The Mileseva Monastery is one of the most important sanctuaries and spiritual centers in Serbia.

Mileseva Monastery was founded by Serbian King Vladislav between 1234 and 1236.  In 1236, the relics of St. Sava (Serbia's most honored patriarch) were moved to Mileseva. In 1377, the coronation of Tvrtko I, the King of Serbia and Bosnia took place in Mileseva Monastery.

In the fifteenth century, the monastery was the seat of the Metropolitan Bishopric of Dabar and Bosnia. During the Turkish period the monastery was demolished and rebuilt several times, a new restoration took place in 1863, when the church considerably changed its appearance.

The Church, dedicated to the Ascension of Our Lord, architecturally belongs to the Raska School. The first groups of frescoes were painted in the 1230s. One of most famous frescoes in Mileseva is the White Angel fresco, dating from the 13th century. These 13th-century frescoes may be considered to be the supreme achievement of all the painting in Europe of that time.
